Initially inspired by the fluid forms of kelp, by some organic serendipity, this typeface has also come to resemble fantastical, calligraphic brushstrokes. Every letterform is made exclusively of curved lines, with a vibrance to them that defies careful calibration. Strokes and arcs swing, they could as much be the loose arms of kelp in water as well as the flickering flames atop candles.
Stramenopiles are ecologically and evolutionarily important. From an ecological perspective, they contribute greatly to carbon and nutrient cycling. Phototrophic stramenopiles, diatoms in particular, produce nearly 40 percent of global ocean-derived oxygen, which is comparable to the entire Amazonian rainforest. Their position in a food chain is complex since the ability to function as a primary producer or consumer is difficult to evaluate. — excerpt from "Integrated Overview of Stramenopile Ecology" from the ISME Journal, 2024.
